Last week, Library and Archives Canada, in collaboration with the Library and Archives Foundation, announced the recipients of this year's Library and Archives Canada Scholar Awards. The annual prize recognizes remarkable Canadians who have made an outstanding contribution to the creation and promotion of Canada's culture, literary heritage and historical knowledge. Among the 2026 recipients is former Second Story Press publisher Margie Wolfe.
In 1988, after 11 years at Women's Press, Margie co-founded Second Story Press, a publishing house dedicated to publishing feminist-inspired books for adults and young readers. She's long had a strong commitment to amplifying voices from diverse communities, including Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, disabled, and refugee/immigrant writers. The first publisher in Canada to receive this honour, Margie was also inducted into the Order of Canada in 2024 and was awarded the 2020 President's Award from the Association of Canadian Publishers, recognizing her as a powerful force for change.
Drew Hayden Taylor, filmmaker, playwright and novelist—whose works include the YA novel The Night Wanderer, as well as the graphic novel adaptation of the same name, both published by Annick Press, is also among the 2026 recipients. Cameron Bailey, Victoria Charlton, and Robert Holmes “R.H.” Thomson round out this year's honourees.
