The Science Writers and Communicators of Canada (SWCC) has announced the winners of the 2025 SWCC Book Awards. Presented annually, the awards celebrate great science books for readers of all ages. Dad, Is It Time to Gather Mint? Celebrating the Seasons, written by Tyna Legault Taylor and illustrated by Michelle Dao (HighWater Press) took home the $1,000 prize in the youth category, as well as the $500 Paradigm Prize for Underrepresented Perspectives in Science Writing. The Paradigm Prize was established in 2021 to expand the landscape of science communication and better represent the diversity of contributors across the community. The prize is awarded to one of the finalist from the general category or youth category. This is the second time that one title won both a category award and the Paradigm Prize.
About Dad, Is It Time to Gather Mint? Celebrating the Seasons
Joshua loves being on the land. When the weather is warm, Joshua and his dad gather mint from the shores of Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek (Lake Nipigon First Nation) in northeastern Ontario. But when will that be? It’s not when the leaves are changing colour. It’s not when the snow falls from the sky. It’s not when the flowers are budding. When is it time to gather mint from the land?
